Breaking it into steps.

We all live with rules. At home, at school, at work, on the road. Rules can feel like a safe frame that holds life together. Or like a rigid corset that keeps us from breathing freely.

Some people hate rules. Others feel safer with them – because they bring predictability. Without rules, life could feel like chaos.

But not all rules make sense. Some exist only for convenience. Some are followed blindly, even when breaking them wouldn’t hurt anyone. Sometimes, bending a rule feels more human than obeying it.

So the real question is not: Are rules good or bad?
The question is: What do they bring into our lives?

Here’s one way to tell the difference:

  • Over time: Do they leave you calmer and stronger, or more frustrated and drained?
  • In your body: Do they bring relief and clarity, or tension and guilt?
  • In flexibility: Do they allow for dialogue and exceptions, or are they “because I said so”?
  • In meaning: Do they teach values like respect and cooperation, or just fear of punishment?

Discomfort can be a clue. Some rules feel uncomfortable at first but later prove valuable. Others keep draining us, leaving nothing behind.

Because rules will always exist. What matters is not their presence, but whether they help us grow – or hold us back.

And maybe the real question is: which rules in your life are worth keeping, and which ones are ready to be released?

A.
